Founded
by Austrian philosopher and educator Rudolf Steiner, Waldorf education is
the fastest growing independent educational movement in the world today. This extraordinary curriculum recognizes
that the child is not an adult, and consequently learns in a different
manner. The aim is to educate the
whole child -- the heart and the hands as well as the head.
Just as the tree cannot grow to
be full and strong unless it receives appropriate ingredients as a seedling
to foster its growth, so too adults will not reach their full potential if
as children the right ingredients were not present.
Waldorf education honors
childhood as the prelude to all that the adult will become in the future.
The young child learns by
imitating, so all that the caregivers do must be worthy of imitation. We use specific activities to develop
abilities within the child which will later flower into capacities to
write, read, think and imagine.
School-age children learn best
through beauty and feeling. Thus,
their environment is addressed with beauty and reverence and great care is
taken in the choice of materials and activities.
At Sheltering Arms we have chosen
this approach for the educative part of our curriculum because we're
convinced of its inherent value. We
see within each child a divine spark which fosters in our staff an acute
awareness of our responsibility and engenders a deep feeling of respect for
the children.
